Use Arena Commander as your practice room

Isolate flight, shooting or racing before combining them in the universe.

An eligible vehicle for the selected mode

STEP 1 OF 13

Choose the skill you want to repeat

Open Arena Commander from the game menu and inspect the available mode list. The official options include flight, ship combat, FPS and racing; availability differs by mode.

Suggested first choice: flight practice for takeoff and braking, then a combat mode for targeting. Do not try to master every system in one session.

  1. 1

Choose the activity, then the compatible vehicle

Open Arena Commander from the game main menu. Pick an available flight, race, combat or FPS mode, then choose the eligible equipment shown for it.

    What you should see

The lobby displays the activity and usable selection before you launch.

    That did not happen

A ship absent from the current list may be ineligible for that mode. Change the mode or selection rather than assuming it was lost from your PU fleet.

Choose the activity, then the compatible vehicle

Open Arena Commander from the game main menu. Pick an available flight, race, combat or FPS mode, then choose the eligible equipment shown for it.

Expected result: The lobby displays the activity and usable selection before you launch.

If it did not work: A ship absent from the current list may be ineligible for that mode. Change the mode or selection rather than assuming it was lost from your PU fleet.

Start with Free Flight, then add one challenge

Free Flight suits movement practice. A Swarm adds AI opponents; racing adds a marked route. Select an offered offline option for private rehearsal. FPS modes practise character combat instead of flying.

SC Nomads first-session plan: choose Free Flight and one familiar ship. Leave competitive PvP for a later session so you can identify a control problem without an opponent interrupting.

Read the complete lobby selection

Main menu > Arena Commander > mode selection

Select the practice mode, then read the displayed map and offline or multiplayer setting before launching.

Expected result: You can identify the selected activity and whether other players can join.

If it did not work: If the desired option is absent, use an available practice mode. The live selection takes precedence over an older guide screenshot.

PvE
Players versus game-controlled opponents, such as the enemies in a Swarm.
PvP
Players competing against other players.

Check eligibility before spending rental credits

Open Vehicle Selection and choose an eligible ship already available to you. A ship missing from one mode is not proof it vanished from your PU account.

REC is Arena Commander rental currency, separate from aUEC. REC rentals stay in AC. Multiplayer Free Flight does not earn REC; the match result is where to inspect any award. Check the offered rental and price before confirming.

Inspect the actual loadout

Arena Commander > Vehicle Selection / Vehicle Loadout

Confirm the selected vehicle and inspect the loadout the current interface actually offers. Keep the starting setup for the first drill.

Expected result: The selected vehicle and equipment are clear before entry.

If it did not work: The April 2026 rental help page describes loadout changes for AC rentals, while an older AC article says otherwise. Use the current available controls; do not spend REC expecting an unavailable option.

Field note: A REC rental is not a way to retrieve that ship at a PU spaceport. PU rentals use aUEC.

Check the mode’s own loadout

Select a ship or character loadout supported by that mode and read its entry rules. PU ownership and Arena Commander selection are related systems, not a promise of identical customization.

Before starting, confirm the bindings you intend to practise. Keep a short note of changes so you do not return to the PU with forgotten controls.

Check the controls in a quiet session

Choose a suitable single-player or free-flight practice option. Inspect your keybindings and test movement, braking, view and weapon selection one at a time.

Expected result: You can reproduce the input and recognise its on-screen result without a live PU delivery at risk.

If it did not work: If a controller does nothing, check the active input device in the binding screen. A keyboard default does not configure a joystick axis.

Find the binding before repeating the input

Open Options > Keybindings. Select your device in the lower-right selector, then Advanced Controls Customization. Locate the flight movement, speed-limiter and spacebrake actions you intend to practise.

A keyboard card does not configure a joystick axis. Read the active binding, test one action and check its visible result before changing another. If an input conflicts, the binding screen identifies competing assignments.

Prove one input at a time

Options > Keybindings > selected device > Advanced Controls Customization

Read the assigned movement or braking input. Return to a quiet session and test it briefly with plenty of clear space.

Expected result: The intended control responds, and the HUD changes in the way you expected.

If it did not work: Check the selected device and assigned action if nothing responds. Keep a note of your previous assignment before editing it.

  • Correct input device selected
  • Movement responds
  • Spacebrake located
  • Speed readout identified
  • View controls do not unexpectedly steer the ship

Compare your limiter with your actual speed

The limiter is a selected limit; it is not proof the ship has already slowed down. Find the actual speed readout before flying toward scenery. Choose a clear reference well away from obstacles.

SC Nomads stop drill: move at a modest speed, release the movement input and observe what happens. Then engage the spacebrake and watch speed decrease. Note the stopping distance; a brake input is not an instant stop.

Brake while watching the speed readout

Separate controls: X

Spacebrake; documented keyboard example X

With clear space ahead, use your active spacebrake input and watch actual speed rather than only the limiter marker.

Expected result: Actual speed falls and you can keep the ship clear of the reference.

If it did not work: If X is remapped or nothing changes, inspect the named spacebrake binding. Check your flight mode and input device before repeating near an obstacle.

Speed limiter
The selected speed limit shown by the flight interface, distinct from measured movement.
Spacebrake
The ship braking control. Watch the measured result and allow room to stop.

Complete an out-and-back exercise

SC Nomads exercise: select one recognizable landmark, approach slowly, stop with room to spare, turn and return to your starting area. Repeat the same path before increasing speed.

Make one change per attempt: speed, turn timing or camera use. If you cannot explain which change helped, return to the previous setup. Passing the exercise means you can stop and regain orientation twice without a collision.

Repeat the same short route

Your tested movement, steering and spacebrake inputs

Fly toward the chosen reference, brake early, turn clear of it and return. Keep the vehicle and flight configuration constant.

Expected result: You complete two controlled returns and can name where you began braking.

If it did not work: Reduce the approach speed if you overshoot. Practise away from the landmark until you can stop consistently.

  • Reference identified
  • Stopping space kept clear
  • Actual speed checked
  • Turn completed without collision
  • Starting area reached again

Run a small, repeatable drill

Our flight drill: accelerate, stop, turn, reacquire a reference and repeat. Our combat drill: select a target, maintain it through a controlled pass, then disengage.

Finish by repeating the skill without consulting the controls menu. That is a useful readiness check before adding missions, cargo or a crew.

Give the practice session a finish condition

Choose one exercise: a clean lap, controlled landing approach, target tracking or a completed wave. Repeat it until you can identify why each attempt succeeded or failed.

Expected result: You leave with one skill you can repeat, rather than only more minutes played.

If it did not work: Reduce difficulty or return to free flight when several unfamiliar controls compete for attention.

  • One practice goal
  • Eligible loadout
  • Bindings checked
  • Drill repeated

Add a Swarm after movement feels predictable

Choose an offered Pirate Swarm or Vanduul Swarm when you want AI combat practice. Our beginner goal is one controlled engagement, not a reward unlock.

Before firing, identify a target, keep it in view through a pass and regain a clear flight path. Check shield and damage feedback between passes. If steering, aiming and weapons all feel unfamiliar, return to Free Flight and separate those jobs.

Select the intended contact under the reticle

Separate controls: T

Vehicles - Target Cycling > Cycle Lock - In View - Under Reticle

Aim at the intended contact and tap T. Read the selected identity, distance and target indication on the HUD before firing. This is the latest inspected CIG default; your saved profile can override it.

Expected result: The selected identity and HUD indication match the contact you intended to select.

If it did not work: If another contact was selected, withhold fire, aim again and reselect. Check the named Cycle Lock action in your device profile if needed; the separate Lock Target Under Reticle action has no inspected keyboard default.

Field note: Offline or solo practice is not a promise of REC or unlock rewards. Read the current online match and reward requirements separately.

Choose one next practice branch

For racing, use the separate racing lesson to complete a valid reconnaissance lap before chasing time. For FPS, use an available character-combat mode and inspect its own equipment and rules.

SC Nomads FPS rehearsal: locate your reload, weapon selection and movement controls before the first engagement. Use the ammunition display to confirm a reload; repeatedly pressing the input does not establish that a magazine was available.

Check the branch-specific inputs

Options > Keybindings > selected device; appropriate movement and weapon actions

For FPS, inspect reload and weapon selection. For racing, identify the active vehicle controls and braking action. Then test one goal in the chosen session.

Expected result: You can state what succeeded: a registered lap, a completed reload or a deliberate equipment change.

If it did not work: Reduce the scope if several unfamiliar systems compete for attention. The first success should be observable and repeatable.

Field note: Continue with /guides/racing-basics for checkpoint and lap practice, or /guides/equipment-and-ammo for personal weapon preparation.

Leave with a result you can repeat

Our closeout: finish the chosen drill, read any result screen and note the vehicle, mode, one useful binding and one mistake to work on next. Leave through the game menu when you are done; do not assume leaving an unfinished match earns completion rewards.

Before returning to the PU, check any bindings you changed. Practise takeoff and landing with the actual PU ship using /guides/first-flight. Combat practice does not establish permission to attack another player in the universe.

Record an observable finish condition

Result screen or game menu, as offered by the selected mode

Identify whether you completed your personal drill or the actual match. Read the result and any displayed reward before leaving.

Expected result: You know what you completed and which control setup you will use next.

If it did not work: If there is no completed-match result, do not count it as a reward unlock. A failed attempt can still identify one useful control to practise.

  • One drill completed twice
  • Changed bindings recorded
  • Displayed reward checked rather than assumed
  • Next PU activity chosen

Before you commit

The 4.10.2 issues list missing Arena Commander loadout options and power-allocation trouble on specific ships after changing power plants. Check the affected list before experimenting.

A successful drill is not proof that a PU mission, networking state or ship variant behaves identically.

Recognize a mode limitation before buying a fix

CIG’s 4.10.2 issues page, checked 18 October 2026, lists missing AC loadout options, including flight blades. It also identifies loss of thruster power allocation after power-plant changes on the Aegis Sabre Raven EX and Aegis Tiburon. CIG lists no workaround and advises against those power-plant changes.

When a selected ship will not behave like the practice ship, record the vehicle, mode, component change and patch. Compare the current known-issues page before spending credits or repeatedly changing unrelated controls. These dated findings are not claims that every ship is affected.

Check the named AC issue

CIG known-issues page > Arena Commander

Compare the affected vehicle and exact symptom with the current issue entry. Keep your reproduction notes for a relevant Issue Council report.

Expected result: You can distinguish a published limitation from an untested theory about a binding.

If it did not work: If the symptom differs, describe it accurately. Do not present an unrelated workaround as a confirmed fix.

The expected component option is absent.: Read the current AC limitations and the selected vehicle’s available interface. A PU loadout does not prove AC parity.

Thruster allocation disappeared after a power-plant change on an affected ship.: Stop that experiment and consult the current issue entry. The cited 4.10.2 entry does not offer a confirmed repair.
