Operate the MOLE: pilot, mining seat and handoff
Practise the MOLE’s occupied mining stations, solo seat changes, crew coordination and movement checks.

CIG’s 21 December 2019 MOLE Q&A says the pilot cannot operate the mining lasers. Each needs an occupied mining seat. Leaving a mining seat turns that laser off.
Use a pilot and one mining operator for a first coordinated exercise, adding other operators when you can coordinate them. Solo, finish one job before walking to the other. These are practice arrangements, not a promise of efficiency or a mandatory crew count.
Historical plans for NPC crews, cargo pods and profit sharing do not establish current functionality. No interior route or station environmental protection has been verified here.
Agree who positions the ship and who operates the first occupied mining station. When alone, identify the pilot-to-work-seat return route while safely parked.
You can identify the flight controls, intended work seat and a route back before approaching a rock.
If you cannot identify the work seat, practise with an experienced operator before paying for modules. A seat with a display is not proof it controls a mining laser.
The same published instructions in one readable view. Use the steps above for controls and practice panels.

Agree who positions the ship and who operates the first occupied mining station. When alone, identify the pilot-to-work-seat return route while safely parked.
Expected result: You can identify the flight controls, intended work seat and a route back before approaching a rock.
If it did not work: If you cannot identify the work seat, practise with an experienced operator before paying for modules. A seat with a display is not proof it controls a mining laser.
Mining stations have limited aiming arcs. A cockpit view of a deposit does not establish work-seat reach.
SC Nomads practice: choose one clear target and make a short stop-and-handoff drill. The operator should read the target before applying power; the pilot should wait for a clear reposition request.
After positioning safely, occupy the chosen mining station and inspect its target, distance and available analysis. Ask for repositioning if the target cannot be worked from that station.
Expected result: The intended rock can be identified and analyzed from the occupied work seat.
If it did not work: Do not compensate for an unreachable target by endlessly increasing power. Stop and return to the pilot seat, or ask your pilot to adjust the position.
Stop the laser, confirm it is inactive, then have the pilot move. Solo, return to the flight controls before moving and reassess the target after sitting down at the mining station again.
Expected result: Flight movement and the next laser attempt are separate, acknowledged stages.
If it did not work: If the target or ship moves unexpectedly, stop work. Do not keep firing while trying to diagnose an unsafe position.
The control cards below reuse the existing mining and salvage lessons. Latest extracted keyboard data is 4.9 LIVE with a 22 August 2026 comparison against 4.10 PTU, not an SC Nomads test of 4.10.2. Your own saved bindings take precedence. Use the normal guide improvement action for inaccurate controls.
Mining mode is not the same thing as an active beam. Fracture breaks a deposit; extraction collects suitable fragments. The power setting is your input, while rock energy and fracture progress show the target’s response. Read the selected mode before firing.
Practise starting and stopping one beam before increasing power. Continue with the detailed first-mining lesson for energy-window and overcharge exercises; this station lesson does not replace them.
Open Options, then Keybindings. Select Keyboard / Mouse and open Advanced Controls Customization. Check Vehicles - Mining and the seat/operator-mode actions.
Expected result: You can read the binding assigned to the action, rather than guessing from a video.
If it did not work: For a stick or throttle, select that device instead. Keep your existing custom layout; do not reset it just to follow this page.
Mining Mode Toggle
Once positioned safely in a mining-capable seat and SCM mode, tap M.
Expected result: Mining information appears. Find the mode name before operating the beam.
If it did not work: If you still see a different operator mode, check the seat, master mode and assigned mining-mode binding.
Fire Mining Laser (Toggle)
A short click toggles the beam. The stop check is whether the beam actually disappears.
Expected result: The beam changes between on and off.
If it did not work: If your input acts differently, check Fire Mining Laser in your own profile. Do not rely on a low power number as proof the laser is off.
Switch Mining Laser (Toggle)
With the beam off, hold Left Alt and click LMB to change between fracture and extraction.
Expected result: The displayed task changes. Read it before firing.
If it did not work: Use the binding menu if nothing changes. Some older guides show RMB; this lesson uses the newer vehicle control.
Increase / Decrease Mining Laser Power
While operating the mining laser, scroll up to raise power and down to lower it.
Expected result: The laser power or throttle readout changes.
If it did not work: If the wheel changes another control, return to mining mode and check your mining power binding.
CIG permits different mining attachments on the arms. Identify each station’s equipment before coordinating it.
SC Nomads crew exercise: nominate one person to call the target and stop signal. Add operators only when each can describe their mode, energy response and intended contribution. Apply the occupied-seat rule explained earlier when rotating jobs.
Ask each operator to identify the selected target, installed head, active mode and stop action before anyone starts a shared attempt.
Expected result: The crew knows which seats are occupied and which equipment each operator controls.
If it did not work: If an operator cannot identify their mode or power response, return to the one-head exercise. More beams are not a repair for an unexplained control problem.
After a clean fracture, identify which pieces are ready for extraction. Stop fracture work before changing task and confirm which operator is collecting.
Expected result: The crew distinguishes making fragments from actually adding material to storage.
If it did not work: If a piece still needs fracturing or storage is full, do not interpret an active collecting beam as successful extraction.
Field note: Rotate pilot and operator after a completed deposit. The learner should explain the next job before taking the controls.
A player in a 2026 MOLE discussion reports planetary wind moving the ship during solo mining; the exact publication date is unconfirmed. This is a player observation, not an SC Nomads reproduction or a guarantee that every location behaves the same way.
If your distance or alignment changes while you are away from the pilot position, stop the beam and return to flight controls. A dedicated pilot reduces the time you must leave the work unattended. A space-mining session avoids surface wind, but does not guarantee that ships or fragments stay motionless.
There is a separate current limitation in space: CIG’s 9 October 2026 known-issues page says mining gadgets cannot be placed while in EVA and lists no workaround. Do not choose an asteroid plan that depends on placing one there.
I keep returning to the pilot seat before finishing a rock.: Check whether movement, work-seat reach or the chosen target causes each interruption. Try a pilot-and-operator session or a different environment before buying more modules.
I switched seats expecting the previous laser to stay on.: Apply the occupied-seat rule above. Return to one station or assign another operator before continuing the exercise.
Field note: Record the build, location, input setup and observed movement when proposing a correction. Keep the wind observation separate from a confirmed universal ship defect.
The MOLE has no refinery in CIG’s design reference. Plan processing and later collection separately. The ship-matrix cargo figure is not a verified ore-storage capacity.
Before taking another target, confirm the material and available storage on your current display. A filled mining ship is an intermediate stage, not proof that a refinery order or sale succeeded.
Note the intended receiving location and who will handle processing, later collection and any shared proceeds. Recheck those decisions before returning with a load.
Expected result: The material has an agreed next destination and the crew knows which job remains after the mining ends.
If it did not work: If there is no suitable collection ship or time for the output, choose a smaller trial. Use the refinery guide to inspect the actual offered method, fee and completion state.
